Mixed-handed children more likely to have mental health, language and scholastic problems, study finds

ScienceDaily (Jan. 27, 2010) ? Children who are mixed-handed, or ambidextrous, are more likely to have mental health, language and scholastic problems in childhood than right- or left-handed children, according to a new study published in the journal Pediatrics.

The researchers behind the study, from Imperial College London and other European institutions, suggest that their findings may help teachers and health professionals to identify children who are particularly at risk of developing certain problems.

Around one in every 100 people is mixed-handed. The study looked at nearly 8,000 children, 87 of whom were mixed-handed, and found that mixed-handed 7 and 8-year old children were twice as likely as their right-handed peers to have difficulties with language and to perform poorly in school.

When they reached 15 or 16, mixed-handed adolescents were also at twice the risk of having symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They were also likely to have more severe symptoms of ADHD than their right-handed counterparts. It is estimated that ADHD affects between 3 to 9 percent of school-aged children and young people.

The adolescents also reported having greater difficulties with language than those who were left- or right-handed. This is in line with earlier studies that have linked mixed-handedness with dyslexia.

Little is known about what makes people mixed-handed but it is known that handedness is linked to the hemispheres in the brain. Previous research has shown that where a person's natural preference is for using their right hand, the left hemisphere of their brain is more dominant.

Some researchers have suggested that mixed-handedness indicates that the pattern of dominance is not that which is typically seen in most people, i.e. it is less clear that one hemisphere is dominant over the other. One study has suggested that ADHD is linked to having a weaker function in the right hemisphere of the brain, which could help explain why some of the mixed-handed students in the study had symptoms of ADHD.

Dr Alina Rodriguez, the lead researcher on the study from the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, said: "Mixed-handedness is intriguing -- we don't know why some people prefer to make use of both hands when most people use only one. Our study is interesting because it suggests that some children who are mixed handed experience greater difficulties in school than their left- and right-handed friends. We think that there are differences in the brain that might explain these difficulties, but there needs to be more research.

"Because mixed-handedness is such a rare condition, the number of mixed-handed children we were able to study was relatively small, but our results are statistically and clinically significant. That said, our results should not be taken to mean that all children who are mixed-handed will have problems at school or develop ADHD. We found that mixed-handed children and adolescents were at a higher risk of having certain problems, but we'd like to stress that most of the mixed-handed children we followed didn't have any of these difficulties," added Dr Rodriguez.

To study the effects of mixed-handedness, Dr Rodriguez and her colleagues looked at prospective data from a cohort of 7,871 children from Northern Finland. Using questionnaires, the researchers assessed the children when they reached 7 to 8 years of age and again at 15 to 16 years of age.

When the children were aged 8, the researchers asked parents and teachers to assess their linguistic abilities, scholastic performance and behaviour. The teachers reported whether children had difficulties in reading, writing or mathematics and rated the children's academic performance as below average, average or above average.

The adolescents' parents and the adolescents themselves completed follow-up questionnaires when they were 15-16 years of age, with the children evaluating their school performance in relation to their peers and the parents assessing their children's behaviour, on a questionnaire that is widely used to identify ADHD symptoms.

A child who spends at least two hours a day in front of a TV screen or computer monitor has a significantly higher risk of developing psychological problems, no matter how much physical activity they do, researchers from the University of Bristol's Centre for Exercise, Nutrition and Health Sciences, England reported in an article published in the American Journal of Pediatrics. The more physically active children who were in front of a screen for at least two hours a day appeared to do better than their sedentary peers in emotional and peer problems, but fared worse in behavioral areas, including hyperactivity.

This latest study, called The PEACH project, assessed over 1,000 kids aged ten and eleven years. The investigators gathered data on how long they spent in front of a computer monitor and/or TV screen, as well as their mental health. The children's levels of physical activity were measured and recorded using an activity monitor.

The researchers found that those children who spend at least two hours watching TV and/or using their computer for non-homework use (recreational use) had higher psychological difficulty scores compared to their peers who spent less time in front of screens. The investigators add that the difficulty scores persisted, irrespective of how physically active the children were.

In other words, it appears that regular prolonged exposure to monitors/screens increases the risk of psychological problems, and exercise does not seem to get rid of the problem.

The authors believe that limiting a child's exposure to TV/Computer screens could play an important role in protecting their current and future mental health and well-being.

The activity monitor indicated that: Kids whose physical activity were gauged as sedentary appeared to get better overall psychological scores.Children with moderate physical activity seemed to have more behavior problems, including hyperactivity, but had better scores relating to peer problems and emotional issues.Their psychological well-being was evaluated via questionnaires which asked them to rate their strengths and difficulties in areas of hyperactivity, behavior (conduct), emotional, and peer problems. They read a series of statements and were asked to rate their truth value with a score of 1 to 3 - with 1 being untrue and 3 being certainly true. En example of statements they had to rate regarding emotional well-being included; "I am often unhappy, down-hearted or tearful', while statements to assess their peer problems included; 'I am usually on my own', 'I generally play alone or keep to myself."

Lead author, Angie Page said:
Whilst low levels of screen viewing may not be problematic, we cannot rely on physical activity to 'compensate' for long hours of screen viewing.

Watching TV or playing computer games for more than two hours a day is related to greater psychological difficulties irrespective of how active children are.

It's wrong to conclude that screen usage causes psychological problems.

Results of statistical tests such as these cannot determine cause and effect. It could be that kids with psychological problems use screens for over 2 hours, or that a 3rd factor, perhaps low birth weight makes both increased screen usage and psychological problems occur.

The strongest language you can use is 'linked'. Which caused which cannot be determined.

So please stop sensationalizing the results of these types of experiments.

If the issue is exposure to the screen itself, why does it matter whether computer usage is recreational or for homework?

Is there any trend toward higher correlations with specific types of screens? Would using an iPad to read eBooks instead of paper books cause the same issues? What if it was a Kindle, which emits no light of its own but rather uses ambient light?

If the message here is "Keep your kids away from the computer screen!", there are far greater implications as schools require more Internet research for homework and eBooks gain greater market share... assuming there isn't really some special exemption for homework use.

These kinds of surveys are proven time and again to be very skewed and not enough information collated to give a absolute scientific answer. did all the children survey have exactly the same environment such as parents social wealth? Also the content of what is view I feel would have a great bearing such as discovery planet or grand theft auto! It gets my goat these headline quotes to scare parents today! If anyone has psychological it's mothers who take all this information in and stress the kids out by being dithering wrecks.

The authors are confused. Children with problems like ADHD will naturally gravitrate to the TV/computer because of their right brains talents. The author has put the cart before the horse. These right brain vision talented children have the ability to also have more emotional problems, not caused by the TV but as a genetically inherited condition.

While I agree with previous posters re kids with psychological problems or potential for psychological problems (as Asperger's kids) are far more likely to use the computer for hours a day, I also know from bitter experience that with some children too long watching a TV screen makes them both lethargic and aggressive.

Known as "Zombie TV viewers" these kids seem to go into an hypnotised state, even though when asked later they seem to not even remember what they were watching. With my son, we found that IF we MADE him look away from the screen and talk to use during the commercials he seemed to be OK.

Is it just me? It would seem this study also shows a relationship between physical activity and problems when it shows that sedentary children fared better psychologically than more active subjects as measured by the activity monitor. Maybe physical activity is the culprit. lol

ADHD and Adults - New Survey Reveals Greater Problems


Children, teens, and adults can all suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD impacts about 5% of the children and teenagers, and about 3% of all adults. Less than half of children with ADHD ever out-grow it in adolescence or adulthood. If untreated, the disorder can have long-term adverse effects into adolescence and adulthood.

It is important to remember that many, or most, children with ADHD will never really out-grow the problems that ADHD brings. This has been well documented, and has been further discussed in detail through recent studies on ADHD and Depression in females.

Recently another reminder of this was published in a national survey of 1,007 adults with ADHD. The survey looked at how adults with ADHD cope at home, at work, and in relationships with others. The survey was published just in time for the 2008 ChADD Conference, and the 2008 ADHD National Awareness Day.

What the survey found was that, of those adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder:


75% reported that ADHD strongly impacted their ability to stay focused to a task long enough to complete it;
70% reported that ADHD strongly impacted their ability to focus on what others were saying;
65% reported that ADHD strongly impacted their responsibilities at home;
60% reported that ADHD strongly impacted their ability to stay seated through a business meeting, or to organized projects, or follow through with projects until they are completed;
57% reported that ADHD strongly impacted their relationships with their families and friends;
56% reported that ADHD strongly impacted their ability to advance in their work place or career;
47% reported that ADHD caused them to have to work harder than others just to accomplish the same amount of work as those without ADHD;

The survey group was asked about what they would like to accomplish, or treatment goals:


50% reported that they would like to get their house organized, and 28% reported that they needed to get their personal finances more organized;
38% reported that they needed to get their moodiness under control, and 26% wanted to improve their relationships with others;
36% felt that their ADHD symptoms were still not under control, and many report feeling depressed thinking about how hard it is to be an adult with ADHD.

The study was headed up by two big names in the ADHD community: Ed (Ned) Hallowell, M.D., who has written important books such as "Driven to Distraction," and Natalie Knochenhauer, who as a mother of ADHD children has become an important advocate in the Philadelphia area.

The study was funded by McNeill Pediatrics, which, by the way, markets CONCERTA (methylphenidate HCI) for the treatment of ADHD in adults, as well as in children. Hallowell and Knochenhauer are both paid consultants for McNeill Pediatrics. So there is an element of this study that is designed to market CONCERTA to those adults who are not receiving any treatment, feel that their ADHD is not under control, and etc.

But this study should be more than that.


IF conservatively 5% of the children in the USA have ADHD, and
IF conservatively 50% of the children in the USA will "out-grow" their ADHD symptoms by the age of 20 or so, and
IF there are approximately 300 million people in the USA,
THEN there are conservatively 7,500,000 adults in the USA alone dealing with "adult ADHD." And if 38% of them feel that their ADHD is not under control, or are depressed by their ADHD, and so on, well that's a lot of people suffering from ADHD even into adulthood (38% of 7.5 million adults with ADHD is 2,850,000 adults who feel it is out of control or feel depressed because of their ADHD).

If you are an adult with ADHD, and you are feeling that you can't get ahead at work because of it, or you can't get organized, or motivated, or get your moods under control, there is help for you.

Yes, medications like Concerta can help. Stimulant medications can help to increase time on task, focus to boring tasks, and so on. Consider medications as a treatment option and talk to your doctor about it.

We also like people to try the combination of an ADHD diet (including high protein, low carbohydrate breakfasts and some caffeine), with ATTEND, Extress or Deprex (for mood stabilization) and Memorin for memory improvement.

With either of the approaches above, counseling or coaching for ADHD as well as for skills and strategies to improve relationships and work performance are essential.
