Uncovering the Symptoms of ADHD

It is a little tricky to identify this symptom of ADHD, as the child doesn't run around or show any 'visible' signs of the disorder. However, if you are careful and observant, you will surely be able to detect this ADHD symptom in the child.

The above mentioned symptoms of ADHD are usually seen in children affected by the disorder. The symptoms can be seen to exist individually or all together. Distraction and hyperactivity are the two most prominent symptoms of ADHD. So if your child is showing any of these symptoms of ADHD, it would be a good idea to get them tested for ADHD. But remember not to jump to conclusions and with the first signs of these indications, do not think that the child has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The symptoms need to be present for at least 6 months for you to confirm ADHD. If confirmed, select a proper course of treatment and your child will soon be free of ADHD.

An intensive, five-week working memory training program shows promise in relieving some of the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, a new study suggests.

Researchers found significant changes for students who completed the program in areas such as attention, ADHD symptoms, planning and organization, initiating tasks, and working memory.

"This program really seemed to make a difference for many of the children with ADHD," said Steven Beck, co-author of the study an associate professor of psychology at Ohio State University.

"It is not going to replace medication, but it could be a useful complementary therapy."

Beck conducted the study with Christine Hanson and Synthia Puffenberger, graduate students in psychology at Ohio State. Their findings are published in the November/December 2010 issue of the Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology.

The researchers tested software developed by a Swedish company called Cogmed, in conjunction with the Karolinska Institute, a medical university in Stockholm.

The software is designed to improve one of the major deficiencies found in people with ADHD working memory.

Working memory is the ability to hold onto information long enough to achieve a goal. For example, you have to remember a phone number long enough for you to dial it. Students have to remember the passage of a book they just read, in order to understand what they're currently reading.

"Working memory is critical in everyday life, and certainly for academic success, but it is one of the things that is very difficult for children with ADHD," Hanson said.

The study involved 52 students, aged 7 to 17, who attended a private school in Columbus that serves children with learning disabilities, many of whom also have an ADHD diagnoses. All the children used the software in their homes, under the supervision of their parents and the researchers.

The software includes a set of 25 exercises that students had to complete within 5 to 6 weeks. Each session is 30 to 40 minutes long. The exercises are in a computer-game format and are designed to help students improve their working memory. For example, in one exercise a robot will speak numbers in a certain order, and the student has to click on the numbers the robot spoke, on the computer screen, in the opposite order.

"At first the kids love it, because it is like a game," Puffenberger said. "But the software has an algorithm built in that makes the exercises harder as the students get better. So the children are always challenged."

Half the students participated at the beginning of the study. The other half were wait-listed, and completed the software program after the others were finished.

Parents and teachers of the participating students completed measures of the children's ADHD symptoms and working memory before the intervention, one month after treatment, and four months after treatment.

Results showed that parents generally rated their children as improving on inattention, overall number of ADHD symptoms, working memory, planning and organization and in initiating tasks. These changes were evident both immediately after treatment and four months later.

On individual measures, between one-fourth and one-third of the children showed clinically significant progress in other words, enough progress to be easily visible to their parents.

The teacher ratings, while pointed in the direction of improvement, were not strong enough to be statistically significant in this study. That's not surprising, Beck said, because very few treatment studies ever find significance among teacher measures.

"Teachers only see the kids for a few hours a day and they are dealing with a lot of other children at the same time. It would be difficult for them to see changes," Beck said.

Beck said this is the first published study they know of testing this software in the United States. One of the strengths of the study is that it used a very typical sample of children with ADHD other studies in Sweden had excluded children who were on medication.

"Most kids with ADHD are on some kind of medication, so it helps to know how this intervention works in these cases," he said.

In this sample, 60 percent of the students were on medication. The results showed the program was equally effective regardless of whether they were on medication or not.

"Medication for ADHD does not help directly with working memory, and the training program does, so it can be useful," Beck said.

"One of the encouraging findings is that parents reported even ADHD symptoms improved after the program, and that isn't the focus. This program is focused on improving working memory."

Beck said they can't say for sure how the program works to help kids with ADHD. But it seems that children are learning how to focus and how to use their working memory on everyday tasks, and they are able to use that knowledge at school and home.

One possible criticism of the study could be that it relies on parental reports, and the parents may be biased.

"That's true, but it is also the parents who are observing the kids day in and day out, and they are the ones who would be most likely to observe any changes that occur," Beck said.

The researchers plan on extending the work by using more objective measures of children's progress after using the program.

Two other co-authors of the study were William Benninger, an adjunct assistant professor of psychology at Ohio State, and Kristen Benninger, a medical student at the University of Toledo.

Beck, Hanson and Puffenberger have no financial interest in the company that makes the software. William Benninger does have an interest, but was not involved in the collection of the data.

Computer-based program may help relieve some ADHD symptoms in children

ADD Symptoms or ADHD Symptoms: What's the Difference?

Let's start with question number one, "What is the difference between ADD symptoms and ADHD symptoms, anyway?" People kept asking me that...

Well, it's really simple. I'm not going to get into highly technical things on this but basically, the H in ADHD symptoms stands for hyperactive. In essence, what this means is attention deficit disorder, or "ADD," versus attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or "ADHD."

Some people with ADD symptoms find that their body is going in high gear, a million miles an hour. They can't sit still, they are all over the place, and they are moving everywhere. That means they are experiencing ADHD symptoms rather than ADD symptoms.

Other people, it's just inside their heads and their body is more relaxed. This means it is just ADD symptoms. That is the general difference.

I am not a PhD and I can't officially diagnose anyone with ADD symptoms vs. ADHD symptoms, but basically the difference is that hyperactivity component in ADHD symptoms and that's it.

And so, it's just a matter of hyperactivity in physical behavior. Some people have that hyperactivity mentally and that would still be just ADD symptoms and if you have the hyperactive, physical version, then you have the H in there.

But, people say, "attention deficit, basically that is the cause of all of this, right? There is a deficit of attention whether it's ADD symptoms OR ADHD symptoms we're talking about, and that's what the problem is, right?"

Well, there is a "deficit"...unless you learn how to use it. See, the coolest part about both ADD symptoms and ADHD symptoms is that everyone with these symptoms also has the ability to, what I call, "Hyperfocus" on something for an exceptional period of time.

To become so focused on something that time just melts away...ADD symptoms, ADHD symptoms aside, you have this uncanny ability.

And when time just melts away and you become so focused--whether it's on your computer or a video game, or a book you're reading, or a sport you're playing--you'll find that you can have an absolute linear 100% degree of focus on that thing as long as you're interested in it.

The number one thing is, when you are taking a look at "Do I have ADD symptoms? Don't I have ADD symptoms? Or, do I have ADHD symptoms? Do I not have ADHD symptoms?" Throw that out the window.

Technique number one is to say, "What are my strengths? What am I really, really good at?" You have to ask yourself that question. Write that down on the note sheet. "What am I really, really good at?"

When you've done that, write down on the same sheet, "What am I really, really NOT good at?"

This is where ADD symptoms or ADHD symptoms come up, which some people might be embarrassed or ashamed of...but it is also where those same ADD symptoms (or ADHD symptoms) can become your single biggest asset.

This is the reason that you can be successful, it's the reason that I'm successful, and it's very simple. It's BECAUSE of my ADD symptoms and ADHD symptoms (you see, I'm actually both!)

You've already developed amazing traits; you've already developed incredibly powerful habits that you might be using the wrong way at this time.

But when you learn to look at those ADD/ADHD symptoms as resources for your ability to be exceptional, that is where having ADD symptoms or ADHD symptoms starts to look like an advantage, not a "disability."

Take the ability to Hyperfocus, for instance. If you have either ADD symptoms or ADHD symptoms, then I would bet anything you have a greater ability than most people to Hyperfocus on a given activity or interest.

But did you know this ability to Hyperfocus is a trait most inventors, entrepreneurs, and even geniuses have in common?

Maybe they didn't think they had ADD symptoms or ADHD symptoms, but they probably were called "spacey" or "driven" or "obsessive" by their contemporaries.

They just learned how to channel their ADD symptoms/ADHD symptoms into their amazing accomplishments...and so can you.

Think about it...what other ADD symptoms/ADHD symptoms do you have, that you could be using today, in a different way, to be outstanding and successful in your life?

Medications For ADHD Symptoms and the Long and Short Term Effects on Your Child's Health


The frequency of ADHD has been reported to be from four to twenty percent of school age children. A more conservative estimate would be from three to five percent, which is probably more accurate, due to improved diagnostic criteria. Clinical observation and population based surveys report a much greater occurrence in boys that in girls (10:1). Over 2 million American school aged boys take the drug methylphenidate (Ritalin). Onset is often comes about by the age of three, although diagnosis is not generally made until later when the child is in school.

This is a particularly effective method if your child struggles with swallowing capsules. Other forms of prescription medications for ADHD include Daytrana which is available in the form of a patch that children can wear for a few hours.

 

There are a number of prescription medications for ADHD that fall into the short/intermediate acting category including Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall, Dextrostat, and Methylin ER. Short/intermediate acting stimulants are ADHD treatment options that have been around for a number of years and have become less desirable than the long acting variety. These medicines must be taken multiple times each day because their effects are short-term in nature. The benefit of short acting Ritalin, Dexedrine and Adderall is cost (due to patent expiration). They are now widely available in generic form and have become the default low cost option.

 

The most broadly accepted choice among the non-stimulant prescription medications for ADHD is Strattera. Strattera and other non-stimulants are not as often prescribed as stimulant drugs. Children who struggle with anxiety in addition to ADHD may be helped by Strattera. Additionally doctors may prescribe Strattera if a child has a difficult time tolerating stimulant medications due to their side effects, or if stimulants simply have failed to give ADHD symptoms relief.

Transcendental Meditation Reduces ADHD Symptoms Among Students - New Study


The Transcendental Meditation technique may be an effective and safe non-pharmaceutical aid for treating ADHD, according to a promising new study published this month in the peer-reviewed online journal Current Issues in Education.

The pilot study followed a group of middle school students with ADHD who were meditating twice a day in school. After three months, researchers found over 50 percent reduction in stress and anxiety and improvements in ADHD symptoms.

Effect exceeds expectations

"The effect was much greater than we expected," said Sarina J. Grosswald, Ed.D., a George Washington University-trained cognitive learning specialist and lead researcher on the study. "The children also showed improvements in attention, working memory, organization, and behavior regulation."

Grosswald said that after the in-school meditation routine began, "teachers reported they were able to teach more, and students were able to learn more because they were less stressed and anxious."

Prior research shows ADHD children have slower brain development and a reduced ability to cope with stress. "Stress interferes with the ability to learn-it shuts down the brain," said William Stixrud, Ph.D., a Silver Spring, Maryland, clinical neuropsychologist and co-author of the study.

"Medication for ADHD is very effective for some children, but it is marginally or not effective for others. Even for those children who show improved symptoms with the medication, the improvement is often insufficient or accompanied by troubling side effects," Stixrud said. "Virtually everyone finds it difficult to pay attention, organize themselves and get things done when they're under stress. So it stands to reason that the TM technique which reduces stress and organizes brain function would reduce ADHD symptoms."

While in some cases a child cannot function without medication, there is growing concern about the health risks and side effects associated with the common ADHD medications, including mood swings, insomnia, tics, slowed growth, and heart problems. In 2006 the FDA required manufacturers to place warning labels on ADHD medications, listing the potential serious health risks.

These high risks and growing concerns are fueling parents' search for alternatives that may be safer for their kids.

The study was conducted in a private K-12 school for children with language-based learning disabilities. Participation was restricted to 10 students, ages 11-14, who had pre-existing diagnoses of ADHD. About half of the students were on medication. The students meditated at school in a group for 10 minutes, morning and afternoon.

To determine the influence of the TM technique, at the beginning and end of the three-month period, parents, teachers and students completed standard ADHD assessment inventories measuring stress and anxiety, behavior and social competency, and executive function. Students were also given a battery of performance tests to measure cognitive functioning.

"The results were quite remarkable"

Andy and Daryl Schoenbach's daughter was diagnosed with ADHD in second grade. Like most ADHD children she was taking medication. "The medication helped but had mixed results-she still lost focus, had meltdowns, and the medications affected her sleep and appetite," said Andy, who lives with Daryl in Washington D.C. "She was not performing close to her potential and we didn't see the situation improving. So at the end of seventh grade when her doctor recommended increasing the medication, we decided it was time to take a different course-stopping the medication and using Transcendental Meditation."

"The results were quite remarkable," Daryl said. "The twice daily meditations smoothed things out, gave her perspective, and enabled her to be in greater control of her own life when things started falling apart. It took some time, but it gradually changed the way she handled crises and enabled her to feel confident that she could take on greater challenges -in her own words, 'climb a mountain.'"

"Everyone noticed the change," Andy added.

Grosswald explained that there is substantial research showing the effectiveness of the TM technique for reducing stress and anxiety, and improving cognitive functioning among the general population. "What's significant about these new findings is that among children who have difficulty with focus and attention, we see the same results. TM doesn't require concentration, controlling the mind or disciplined focus. The fact that these children are able to do TM, and do it easily shows us that this technique may be particularly well suited for children with ADHD," she said.

This study was funded by the Abramson Family Foundation and the Institute for Community Enrichment.

A second, recently completed TM-ADHD study with a control group measured brain function using electroencephalography (EEG). Preliminary data shows that three months practice of the technique resulted in significant positive changes in brain functioning during visual-motor skills. Changes were specifically seen in the circuitry of the brain associated with attention and distractibility. After six months TM practice, measurements of distractibility moved into the normal range.

A third, $2 million TM-ADHD study, to be funded in part by a grant from The David Lynch Foundation, will more fully investigate the effects of the technique on ADHD and other learning disorders.

It has also been found that children on long-term medication have significantly higher rates of delinquency, substance use, and stunted physical growth.

Most ADHD drugs often leave a patient with side effects. In some circumstances, the side effects have been said to be just as bad, if not worse than the symptoms of ADHD themselves. So could this possibly be true?

Understanding ADHD Symptoms and ADHD Drug Side Effects

In order to know whether ADHD drug side effects are worse than ADHD symptoms, you need to first understand how each one differs. The symptoms of ADHD may include:

- A lack of attention to detail.

- Hyperactivity.

- Becoming fed up easily and possibly aggressive.

- Not listening attentively.

- Interrupting frequently during a conversation.

ADHD symptoms can cause a child to appear rude, aggressive and hyperactive, but it all really depends upon the severity of the condition as each child will react differently. Some children will only experience slight attention difficulties, whilst others can be overly aggressive and disruptive.

With all ADHD medication, it is likely that at least one side effect will be felt, but usually it is a mild one which does not last for long. Whilst the side effects can be mild and there are ways to minimize them, there are times when the side effects can be so bad that they are unbearable for both the child and parent. Medications which cause further problems to the child's mood and behaviours often cause parents to feel like they are at a loss as to what to do next.

It isn't only changes in the mood that can be worrying. Insomnia can cause the child to be more irritable and problems with concentration can become worse. Headaches can also be unpleasant, as can tummy upsets too.

Whilst drugs are helpful for managing ADHD symptoms to a certain extent, they can potentially cause worse side effects than the symptoms of ADHD. In these cases, alternative ADHD treatments such as herbal remedies, behavioural therapy and special educational interventions should be sought. It is essential to consult with the doctor before stopping any ADHD medications and trying alternative treatments.
